Chocolate Souvlaki would sound quite shocking to Greeks. In fact, if I mentioned it to any of my friends they would laugh or make a confused facial expression. But don’t worry, I did not cover the meat with chocolate sauce, I just took an inspiration from the most famous Greek street food and turned it into a Keto dessert. Why wouldn’t we enjoy sweet bites on a stick? Being a dedicated Keto foodie, I came across many different versions of Keto cake, but Keto souvlaki is more than just a cake. It’s a tribute!

Keto chocolate souvlaki inspiration

Even if you are not an expert in Greek food, you most probably heard the story about souvlaki. Grilling meat on skewers dates back in distant history. Let’s see, one more time, the archaeological proof of Souvlaki from the alien island in the Mediterranean sea…

Ancient skewers in Santorini

KebabIn those glorious historic times, Homer in the Iliad (1.465) wrote about pieces of meat roasted on sticks (ὀβελός). When I visited Santorini, or as we call it Thira, I got overwhelmed with this artefact. Now, we are talking about souvlaki grill which is 3000 years old! This is something that cannot be overlooked! Humans, obviously have some serious historic love affair with placing pieces of food on sticks. It makes it easy to consume and has this unique aesthetic appeal when served.

Is it a cake?

Well, of course, it’s a cake. I did not want to experiment and prepare keto chocolate sauce which can be used with meat. It’s not that I haven’t heard about it, believe me, I did! It is just not something anybody would associate with Greece. This is why I prepared a simple sponge cake, infused it with a dash of orange essential oil and coated it with one of the tastiest Keto chocolate sauces you can utilise for various different desserts. For the decoration, I chose sesame seeds. Not only because sesame seeds are extremely healthy and abundant in minerals and vitamins. I simply couldn’t think of anything that will fit into a Greek tradition better than sesame seeds.
